Its introduction was first rendered possible during the Second Punic War wherein enormous quantities of silver were captured by the Romans in the sack of Syracuse. The Denarius would become the main silver coin of Rome for over four centuries. Unlike in Imperial Rome where the Denarius always depicted the portrait of the emperor, Republican Denarius varied greatly
